Another song that anyone would instantly recognise after the first note or two is played. Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits is a beautiful song to learn and play and should certainly be on your TODO list when you get a Capo.

Back in 1980, Romeo and Juliet made its debut on Dire Straits’ album Making Movies. Surprisingly to me it only made it to number 8 in the charts, however songs of this calibre have a habit of coming back around so I wouldn’t be shocked to see it being used in a movie or TV advert and finding it hit the mainstream again.

Now when it comes to playing this song, I’m not sure how familiar you may be with alternate tunings, but this song should be played with an open G tuning, and a Capo at the 3rd fret. Don’t be intimidated by the mentioning of an open G tuning, it’s really quite a quick job to tune you guitar to open G, Essentially instead of your strings being tuned to E A D G B E, they will be D G D G B D.

Let’s see Mark Knopfler up close playing the song live, there’s a little bit of an intro so you may want to skip the first minute but this video does quite a good job of showing Mark playing the Guitar with the Capo in position on the 3rd fret, check out :

Quick Tip: After you have tuned your guitar, place the Capo on the guitar and then RECHECK your tuning, you may and probably will need to adjust a little for the guitar to sound note perfect after applying the Capo.

And for the tablature, this is the introduction,

I suggest watching the video, practice and practice the tab above, paying attention to the flamboyant way that Mark uses his right hand for up and down strokes.

When it comes to the rest of the please watch and listen to what TotallyGuitars have to say about playing the song as they have some golden advise on how to play to the make the most of the song:

Hotel California is one of the most popular songs by the group The Eagles. This song was released in the year 1977 and is one of the best known rock songs of its era. The writing credits of this song go to Don Felder, Glenn Frey and Don Henley. The original recording of this song shows Henley singing the lead vocals while Joe Walsh and Felder played the extended guitar section of this song. There have been various satanic interpretations of this popular song however; the group states that this song is their interpretation of the dark underbelly of the American dream and also about the excess in the country.

Playing the Song

The Capo has to be placed on the 7th Fret while playing this song however; certain parts of the song do not require the use of a capo. This song has to be played by multiple guitars to get the full effect. There are many variations of the tab for this song, some others again with the capo on the 7th fret but also requiring you play complex barre chords 7 frets up from there.. which of course is very difficult unless you have extremely nimble fingers. I find this tab to be one of the best. Enjoy.

The Sound of Silence was written by Simon in Feburary 1964. Ths song was responsible for the popularity of the Folk Music Duo“Simon and Garfunkel”. The original version prefered by the artists was remixed after which it has become the perfect example of folk rock release. This song was originally known as the Sounds of Silence but was later retitled however; both the singular and plural appear in the lyrics of some versions of this song. The Sound of Silence features Simon playing an acoustic guitar.

Playing the Song

This is quite a good song for guitar beginners or those new to capos to improve their picking and rhythm skills. Although it can be played on an acoustic alone, this song can be played using a combination of acoustic guitar and electric guitars with the capo on the 6th Fret. In this guitar tab, the introduction is played using two guitars the first electric and the second acoustic. The song ends with the electric guitar.

Even those not familiar with Taylor Swift who have seen ‘The Hunger Games’ will recognise this song. Taylor Swift is not afraid of using capos by any means and its use can be found on many of her songs including Love Story, Mean, You Belong With Me and many others. Maybe the use is to bring the key of her songs up to her vocal range or simply she may just enjoy the brighter sound a capo can bring to guitar music. Personally I believe the latter.

Released December 23rd, 2011. Taylor took a less than typical approach of announcing the release of the song via Twitter with a download link to iTunes. The song title immediately became a top trending term on twitter. A good use of social media there as sales hit 136’000 in the first two days.

In the video below, we can see John Paul White from the Civil Wars positions the Capo up to the 7th Fret, so without further nonsense from myself, here is the video, tablature and tutorial videos for you to learn this tune in no time.

Wonderwall has to be one of the most famous songs that can be heard being played by everyone with a guitar from the beginners learning their chords and rhythm techniques through to the seasoned pro. Released in 1995 on Oasis’ album “Whats the story, morning glory?” Wonderwall topped the charts around the world and aside from being one of the bands most iconic songs, has also attracted a large number of cover versions and occurances of other artists singing parts of the song in their own performances. To name a few artists there has been Mike Flowers Pops, Ryan Adams, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Paul Anka, Girls Aloud, Jason Mraz, Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol and others.

One of those songs which undoubtedly will stand the test of time, you only have to play the first bar with the correct rhythm and anyone listening will know immediately what is to follow, Wonderwall should be on your list of songs to learn if you don’t already know it, and if you don’t – then get your capo out now, place it on the second fret and follow the instructions and videos below and you’ll have it nailed down and added to your repertoire in no time at all.

Remember to keep the rhythm there and continuous with your strumming hands throughout the intro/verses, that really is key to making the song sound correct, and one last tip.. when I play it, when I’m playing the intro and verse, two of my fingers remain fixed in the same position throughout, never leaving the fretboard. See if you can figure out which

Noel Gallagher has his Capo on the 2nd fret for this song, the key of the song is in F#minor, make sure the capo is in perfect position and you can play a chord without any twang, just a perfectly clear sound.

Chords used:

	 EADGBe
Em7	(022033)
G	(320033)
Dsus4	(xx0233)
A7sus4	(x02033)
Cadd9	(x32033)
Dsus4/F# (2x0233) [note:some people think this is a G/F# (200033)]

Here's the rythym of how the chord in the verses should be played:

Here comes the sun written by George Harrison for the 1969 Abbey Road album by The Beatles is one of those immediately recognisable songs that has stood and will continue to stand the test of time.

The famous guitar riff is fairly easy for a beginner to pickup and with the use of a Capo on the 7th Fret as George Harrison shows, the song is easy to play and sound like the real thing.

Check out the video that clearly show the use of the Capo on the fret:
